Beauty is in the eye of the beholder – and once you see Grgich Hills Estate, you’ll most certainly know beauty. The rich soil produces not only grape vines for excellent wines, but richlawns, verdant trees, and the kind of picture postcard views you’ll want to write home about. There is just something about visiting a high quality winery that puts a person at ease. A glass to taste, a warm sun to bask under, and time away from the business of life can be the perfect medicine for anyone.
Grgich Hills has a long history dating back decades. But if it wasn’t for a single moment in 1976 the winery may not be what it is today. Miljenko “Mike” Grgich took a bottle of his 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay to the Paris Tasting where French judges tried many different wines from across the globe. From aroma to taste, they finally came to the conclusion that the winner was none other than a wine from a Napa Valley winery. Mike Grgich’s Chardonnay. As an international event, the spectators couldn’t believe it.
This win not only ensured the future creation of Grgich Hills, but it helped to shine the light on the Napa Valley and California wine industry as a whole. Today, that legacy of attention to detail and commitment continues. Grgich Hills wines have been served at tables headed by people such as Presidents Regan and Clinton, Queen Elizabeth II, and French President François Mitterrand. Of course, the winery wouldn’t be as proud if many people across the country didn’t enjoy it just as much!
The winery produces six wines that are each given an extraordinary amount of care so they come out exquisite every time. Try the Chardonnay first, with its complex flavors and excellent balance. Then move on to the Cabernet Sauvignon, the Zinfandel, the Merlot, and then the dessert wine fondly named Violetta after Violet Grgich, Mike’s daughter.
Take some time to visit Grgich Hills Estate and see what makes it such a special place. Meet with Mike himself and head off to the tasting room for an expedition in great flavors. If you like, you can also hold private events. They offer gourmet luncheons to a bit of grape stomping! A tasting room is perfect for smaller groups where their VIP room is richly decorated and ready to receive a wider range of guests for meetings to dinners. The Club Salon is small and simple while the Library Room puts you in the center of history.
