Families built the wine industry, and despite the fact that many wineries, even in Napa, are now the product of corporations instead of families, Nickel & Nickel works to continue the tradition of family legacies on a daily basis.
Located in beautiful Oakville, Nickel & Nickel was initially established in 1997 by Gil Nickel. It was named for Gil and his son Jeremy. The winery sits on the 42 acre John C. Sullenger vineyard, and the goal here is to produce small-lot single vineyard wines.
Founder Gil Nickel is also responsible for the famed Far Niente and Dolce brands, but don’t let that influence your thoughts about Nickel & Nickel. This brand is a wholly different experience. Created to express the unique personality of each vineyard on the property, the main focus here is the production of a single-vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. You can also find a smaller collection of other single-vineyard wines here too including Charonnay, Merlot, Syrah, and Zinfandel.
The goal here wasto build a beautiful modern winery, and they’ve done nothing short of that on a piece of land that is as historically rich as it is agriculturally stunning. The land was initially developed in 1865 by John Sullenger who had once been a prospector turned mine owner. Nickel & Nickel bought the land in 1998, and they promptly restored the original farmstead, build additional structures that were reminiscent of the first buildings on the property, then began constructing one of today’s best wineries inside this historically significant property.
One of the first things many people notice is the collection of classic looking barns that you can see from Highway 29. The Queen Anne-style home, also original to the property, only helps to add to the historical significance. Today, the home helps to welcome guests and serve as the main point of hospitality on the property. Inside, you’ll find a beautifully restored central staircase, the original fir wood floors, and the original arched ceiling cellar.
Guided tours of both the home and the property are available each week. Tastings are also offered several times each day. The tours begin at the house. They include a chance to walk through the barn and other buildings and along the breathtaking grounds. At the end of the tour, you have a chance to taste a small selection of wines paired with artisanal cheeses.
Whether you love wine or you’re just a fan of architecture and natural beauty, a tour of Nickel & Nickel is the way to go.
